Research project
EVALUATING THE IMPACTS OF STRATEGIC COMMUNICATION IN WOMEN'S PARTICIPATION AND REPRESENTATION IN CIVIC LEADERSHIP IN NIGERIA
This study examines the ongoing gender gap in civic leadership in Nigeria, where women remain significantly underrepresented in governance and decision-making spaces despite their strong participation in the labour force. While women contribute meaningfully to the nation’s economic and social development, this contribution is not reflected in leadership positions, revealing a clear imbalance in representation. The research explores how strategic communication can be used to increase women’s participation in civic leadership by inspiring confidence, shaping positive perceptions, and challenging long-standing socio-cultural and institutional barriers. Using a mixed-methods approach, the study combines questionnaires, key informant interviews, and content analysis of media and advocacy materials to capture both broad trends and lived experiences. This approach allows for a deeper understanding of how communication influences women’s civic engagement. The study aims to provide practical, evidence-based recommendations that strengthen policy and advocacy efforts. Improving women’s leadership representation is essential for inclusive governance, democratic growth, and gender equality in Nigeria.
