This study investigates the role of strategic communication in promoting women’s participation and representation in civic leadership in Nigeria. Despite women constituting nearly half of the population, they remain underrepresented in leadership due to entrenched sociocultural, institutional, and financial barriers. Guided by Framing Theory and Feminist Communication Theory, the research employed a mixed-method approach, combining quantitative surveys (883 respondents) and qualitative interviews with women leaders, media practitioners, and civil society representatives across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones. Findings reveal that awareness of campaigns is high (86.9%), with social media (65%), radio (43%), and television (24%) being the most influential channels. Exposure to strategic communication significantly increased respondents’ willingness to participate in civic leadership and was the strongest predictor of perceived campaign effectiveness. Communication also positively shaped public perception by challenging gender stereotypes and promoting women’s leadership potential. However, persistent barriers such as patriarchal norms (72%), lack of financial support (62.7%), and gender stereotypes (61.6%) continue to hinder participation. Qualitative data emphasized the importance of storytelling, role-model visibility, community advocacy, and mentorship, while noting challenges in funding and program sustainability. The study concludes that strategic communication is a powerful catalyst for women’s civic engagement, particularly when combining digital advocacy with grassroots outreach. To achieve sustained impact, communication efforts must be integrated with gender-sensitive policies, mentorship programs, institutional reforms, and sustainable funding. This research contributes empirical evidence linking strategic communication with enhanced women’s leadership, highlighting the need for multi-pronged approaches to overcome structural barriers.
